The music publishing empire J Albert & Son was founded by Jacques Albert. Even now to this day stands as the oldest independant publishing house in Australia. Jacques Albert migrated to Australia from Switzerland in 1884 and set up as a music publisher.

Jacques son Sir Alexis Albert carried on the business and it would be one of his three sons that would help shape the fortunes of the Easybeats and AC/DC.

Ted Albert the middle son of three of Sir Alexis Albert helped form the off-shoot record company Albert Productions. Ted set about signing the musical talent of Australia in the early sixties. It was through a friend called Mike Vaughan that Ted first met an up and coming band by the name of The Easybeats. First impressions of the Easybeats strirred Ted and he promptly snapped the band up on a contract and Easyfever was born.

After the short-lived sucess of the Easybeats on the International scene Ted Albert lured the main stays of the band George Young and Harry Vanda back to Australia in 1973. The artist however that would consolidate the re-birth of Albert Productions as a force in the Australian Record Company industry would prove to be the signing of John Paul Young (no relation). John Paul Young had a minor hit with the Vanda/Young composed track Pasadena in April 1972. It was this sucess that enabled Ted Albert to persude George Young and Harry Vanda to run a recording studio for Albert records. John Paul Young would later go on to be more remembered for the hit single Love is in the Air.

Harry Vanda and George Young would go on to produce records for numerous Australian acts as well as working on various side projects themselves. It would be through Vanda and Young that Angus and Malcolm Young would have their first taste of the recording industry whilst working on the Marcus Hook Roll Band project. This early experience would prove valuable when AC/DC went on to record the early albums and singles for the Albert label under the guidance of George Young and Harry Vanda.

Ted Albert sadly would later die of an heart attack in 1990.

It is reported that Albert Records are planing to lauch their own website

Music Sales and J. Albert & Son have signed an exclusive print agreement. The two companies have worked together since 1972, when Music Sales UK and Albert & Son set up Music Sales Australia as a joint venture. Later the Albert group took over distribution while Music Sales supplied most of the international product from London and New York. The new agreement is timely: Earlier this year when Sydney was hit by hailstones, most of the stock in Music Sales Australia's warehouse was destroyed, with the warehouse closed for business for two months. Now Music Sales will be reprinting most of the stock and reusing all the Albert catalogue in new books. Music Sales Australia's managing director Norm Lurie says, "The Albert's catalogue not only contains the very best of Australian rock and pop from the 60's through to the 90's but also many of the international hits of the '30's, '40's and '50's." Albert & Son CEO, Fifa Riccobono, who is spending more time in the company's London office, will be in a better position to approve usages and artwork prepared here and overseas.

new licensing agreement for Australia and New Zealand commencing June 2006

J. Albert & Son PTY Limited and Sony BMG Music Entertainment are thrilled to announce an exclusive licensing deal between the two companies for all releases in Australia and New Zealand effective from June 2006.

Albert Productions - the recording division of the 120 year old independent music publishing company J. Albert & Son - is synonymous with the term Oz Rock and has been the home of domestic and international hitmakers including AC/DC, Stevie Wright, Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs, The Easybeats, The Angels and Choirboys over the past four decades.

As well as being the home of the entire AC/DC catalogue, Alberts is also worldwide publisher of the band's copyrights. AC/DC was recently named by RIAA as the fifth highest selling recording act in American music history, having surpassed 120 million album sales worldwide.

The new licensing deal with SONY BMG Australia will see Alberts' back catalogue, digital content and future CD and DVD releases issued through SONY BMG Music Australia and New Zealand. It will also bring the AC/DC catalogue under the same label banner internationally for the first time.

Denis Handlin AM, Chairman & CEO of SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT Australia & New Zealand, said: "Alberts' contribution to Australian music cannot be overstated. We are absolutely delighted to strike this new licence partnership for Australia and New Zealand."

"David Albert and Fifa Riccobono have exciting plans for continuing local artist signings going forward. We can see great opportunities to enhance sales of Albert's releases through traditional and digital channels.

"The whole SONY BMG team is really looking forward to working with David and Fifa and the Albert's team to achieve great success going forward with their catalogue and new releases."

On signing the new label deal Alberts' MD David Albert and Executive Director Fifa Riccobono said: "the agreement with Sony BMG comes at an exciting time for the company with a revitalised period of acquisition, artist signings as well as the international exploitation of great new rock acts for both the UK and Australian labels. Alberts is currently associated with

Sony BMG internationally through the AC/DC recording catalogue. The local label signing is another opportunity to build on this successful partnership." They also added "Alberts would like to acknowledge and thank all at FMR/Warners for their work over the past four years, in particular Ed St John and Michael Parisi."

As one of Australia's leading independent rock labels, Alberts continues to champion great acts and expand on its legendary history. Dallas Crane is scheduled to release their second album for the label following the success of their 2005 triple ARIA nominated self-titled debut album. Other releases will be scheduled for Alberts UK artists including Breed 77 and The Answer.

SONY BMG is Australia's leading music entertainment company, holding the #1 market share position for sales and airplay as well as local artist success in both 2005 and 2006 to date.

Artists released by SONY BMG include; Midnight Oil, John Farnham, Delta Goodrem, Shannon Noll, Guy Sebastian, Pete Murray, TV Rock, Rogue Traders, Something For Kate, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Foo Fighters, Destiny's Child, Pearl Jam, Justin Timberlake, Pink, Christina Aguilera, Dixie Chicks and John Mayer among many others.
