The Edwards Tavern was the most packed I had ever seen it.
It was about 27436527 degrees inside, I reckon they turned off the
aircon to make everyone drink more!
Thunderstruck played three sets of great AC/DC stuff, the third set
was with Dave Evans. I really didnt know what to expect when Dave came out
on stage - everyone was hangin for him to get out there (definitely no
offence
to the regular singer of Thunderstruck! He does an awesome Brian Johnson,
and sings
the Bon tracks like Brian sings em (I reckon anyway!)). After a couple of
hours
of blasting out track after track of classic AC/DC material they launched
into their
third set with Dave. "Rockin in the PArlour" was first up. I was blown away
by just how
powerful this track sounded live and in your face - definitely better live
than
the original recording if only for the big volume of the PA's!
Dave burst out on stage and launched into it - you could see he was really
worked
up for it. He sang it just like it was recorded but with a lot more 'edge'
in his
voice and really got the crowd worked up - everyone went nuts when he came
out.
Straight into "Can I sit next to you Girl?" next ( i think!!) and this was
fantastic too -
"baby please dont go" as well was great. I was in AC/DC heaven. Dave was
really pumped,
you could see it when he sang. The whole band was on fire!
Then Dave said a few words about Bon, said how he used to see Bon down the
front
at the early AC/DC shows. He said how for him AC/DC was still the best band
in the
world and how much respect he had for Bon cos he was the guy who took em to
the
whole world. Everybody in the place echoed his sentiments. Then he said he'd
picked out
four tracks that Bon had recorded with 'DC that he felt told a bit of a
story
about the way Bon lived to sing in tribute to him.
The band launched into (and not necessarily in this order! it was a big
night!)
TNT, Long way to the Top (complete with a piper on stage!!!), a more solemn
moment
with Ride On, then topped the night off with Highway to Hell. I'm pretty
sure those
were the tracks played.
After the show Dave hung out in the pub for a while signing posters etc and
answering questions and was just generally a great guy - very willing to
talk
about his time in the band and his life since. Myself and a couple of
friends were
lucky enough to be able to chat with him upstairs for near on an hour - it
was great
fun, we were joking around about the early videos he did with the band and
he related
a few stories from the early days over a few bourbons.
The night was a complete success in every way - the band was
tiiiiiiiiiiiggggght and rockin,
Dave was an all round top bloke and sang with everything he had, and most of
all we all
paid tribute to the memory of Bon.
To Dave Evans and Thunderstruck - I salute you!!
Cheers,
Clint.
The live recording of the show titled "A Hell of Night" was released in May 2000.
