When we got back to the buses (they usually leave about an hour after the show, for those interested) Phil came out first and signed a few things for the ten or so people that were there. Didn't meet him, he walked off before getting the chance. Then he got in a bus with Brian and Cliff (neither of them came where the fans were) and they left. A few minutes later Mal and Ang got on their bus, drove through the gate where the fans were and I thought "shit, they're not gonna stop either" but the bus pulled to the curb and out they came. As has been well documented, they are extremely small. Five or six people surrounded both of them, I initially waited to meet Mal. When he got to me, he sorta looked for what I had to sign, but I didn't have anything (frankly, never been into to autographs) and I just stuck out my hand and said, "I just wanted to be able to say I met Malcolm Young." He smiled shook my hand and I said "You are the coolest guy in rock," to which he responded genuinely humble, "Oh, no, no," and I said something along the lines of "See, you're so understated, that's what's so cool." Then I added we'd see them tomorrow, at this point he'd started signing something else and probably only half heard me. So... (god I hate typing this much, but it is my duty to the ng) now I get in line to meet Angus. Let me say this about Angus, he was friendly, smiling, taking pics (My friend told him, while taking a picture for someone else, "give the horns Angus this is Texas," to which he obliged.) but at the same time I think he was exhausted, he was there but not there. He acknowledged comments with smiles and gestures but never really said a word, and wasn't responsive in a meaningful way like his brother. I said to him (making an obscure LTBR video reference) as I shook his hand, "I just wanted to meet the notorious Young brothers." He smiled and pointed toward Mal, as if to say that's us. Then I told him great show, we'll see you tomorrow in Houston. At this point Mal, who as I said probably only half heard me say we'd see them tomorrow the first time, perked up and said,"Oh, you guys are going to Houston tomorrow? Hey alright." I said yes, and then we exchanged a couple of other comments and they got back on the bus and left. In summary, it was great to meet them. Somehow I always knew I would. I didn't really get worked up about it like I might have done when I was younger, nor did I worry about what to say, the actual words were unimportant. The fact that Malcolm was so real, and that he even initiated conversation after hearing me tell Angus we'd see them tomorrow, was as good as any fan blather I could have come up with (A real moment, as opposed to a created one). And don't get me wrong Angus was extremely friendly as well, you just weren't able to connect with him, if that makes any sense. Like I said, he was probably exhausted. We did go to Houston the next night. Probably around fifty people waiting around the buses. We waited awhile (this time with camera in hand) but finally figured there were too many people, and they wouldn't be out. I guess we were half right, sounds like (from another post) Ang finally showed up but the rest snuck off. Which makes sense because we did see the bus they were on the night before leave without anybody on it (probably picked them up somewhere else). I promise never to type this much again.
