Review by Mike Just got in from the show in Detroit..... two words can only explain it.... F**KING AMAZING!!!!!!!!..... it was the loudest show that I have ever went to see.... the boys rocked and they always will ...... there is this HUGE f**king statue of Angus, like off the stiff upper lip album... that was sitting behind Phil..... id say that it was at least 50 feet tall.... no blow up doll for Whole Lotta Rosie though..... All in all a very f**king good show best I have ever seen........ AC/DC WILL NEVER DIE!! Mike
Aug 4, 2000, 12:15 pm PT AC-DC Plagued by vocal problems in the tour opener Tuesday (Aug. 1) in Grand Rapids, Mich., AC/DC singer Brian Johnson returned to form Thursday (Aug. 3), engaging the Palace of Auburn Hills, Mich. audience with true-to-form playful banter and a lounge singer-like stage presence. "We're just gonna get hotter and hotter," Johnson said, introducing "Hell Ain't a Bad Place To Be." Johnson's vocals were impeccable throughout the two-hour, 20-song set Thursday. The singer, who nearly lost his voice during "Back in Black" at Grand Rapids' Van Andel Arena Tuesday, was overtly polite when he introduced songs, which he referred to as "she." "You guys have been keeping rock and roll alive," Johnson said to the sold-out crowd. "Here's one of the old ones. It's called 'Shot Down in Flames.' Remember that one?" Other songs, such as "Hard as a Rock," were accompanied with sexually graphic videos. Guitarist Angus Young –- book-ended by long-haired, tank-top-wearing guitarist Malcolm Young and bassist Cliff Williams -- was at times maniacal and child-like. With mouth agape, Young ripped through guitar solos while he chicken-walked across the stage. During "Hell Ain't a Bad Place To Be," he slowly brought his hands to head, fashioning his fingers into the shape of devil horns, which drew a fanatical response from the crowd. While Young taunted the audience, Johnson did an Irish jig in the corner, perpetuating the suggestion that AC/DC felt more comfortable onstage after getting the tour opener under its belt. Running to the opposite side of the stage, Young grabbed onto a barrier and slumped to the floor and panted wildly, poking fun of his age. The suburban Detroit crowd was more raucous than the Grand Rapids audience. Ironically, during the guitar intro to "Rock and Roll Ain't Noise Pollution," the audience's response approached Backstreet Boys and 'NSync levels, overlapping the music. The production was more extravagant than in years past. A five-story bronze statue of Angus Young loomed over the stage, which was flanked by scaffoldings that held spotlights. A catwalk, above which hung the AC/DC bell, dove deep into the main floor. Cannons went off touring the closer "For Those About To Rock (We Salute You)." Slash's Snakepit, whose latest album is due out on Koch Entertainment in the fall, opened the show with a lackluster set. Shirtless, with long hair reaching to his waist, new singer Rod Jackson screamed through a half-hour show. "Do y'all want to hear Slash? Me too. Go ahead brother," said the David Lee Roth-cum-Axl Rose knock-off as Slash got on his knees for a guitar solo. Tuesday night, the Grand Rapids, Mich., opener, Slash's Snakepit did a take on "It's So Easy," but Thursday they reached into more familiar territory. "I want to introduce you to one of my good friends, 'Mr. Brownstone,'" Jackson said before doing a dead-on imitation of Rose singing the drug-themed song. Wrapping up the show, Jackson ran out onstage for his own encore before being dragged off by a fellow member of the Snakepit. But AC/DC, the elder statesmen of the rock scene, shot to thrill and hit the target.
