AC/DC Aberdeen Exhibition + Conference Center Sunday 2nd June 1996

Below is a reveiw of the time i was privalleged to see the band live.

At approximately 20 minutes to nine a large screen descended from the roof of the Aberdeen Exhibition & Conference Centre. Next the famous AC/DC Gothic style logo appeared on the screen and immediately the chant of "Angus Angus" erupted around the 6000 strong audience. A short cartoon featuring Beavis and Butthead was shown. After the cartoon finished the crowd was sent into a frenzy of excited anticipation as a crane powered up with sparks firing. A large ball moved across the space high above the stage before crashing with a thunderous blow into a makeshift wall.

Immediately from almost nowhere the band appeared and launched straight into the opening chords of "Back in Black". At this point the crowd went absolutely bananas, with everyone united in dance and admiration of the greatest rock band of all time. After "Back in Black" Brian shouted to the crowd "Ohhh you like rock n roll" , "We've never been this far north before, its good to see you Aberdeen".

"Shot down in flames" , "Hard as a rock" , "Shoot to thrill" and "Thunderstruck" followed in quick procession with the crowd barely getting time to catch their breath between songs. When "Boogie man" was played their was a sigh of relief between many of the fans that a song slower in tempo would allow many to cool down and catch their breath. The "Boogie man" saw some excellent solo guitar work by Angus and some sleazy hard rocking bluesy vocals from Brian. During "Boogie man" Angus did his now infamous strip-tease act which resulted in the revealing of a pair of boxer-shorts with the band's logo before the convential moonie.

"Hail Caesar" was to follow, on the video screen which hung at the back of the stage a video of Angus dressed as a centurion with complete roman armour could be seen. During the track the word "HAIL" was displayed at the approiate time.

With all the excitement it was very hard to remember the precise order of the setlist. However at precisely half past nine Brian started running around the stage pointing at his watch. This was the cue for the large steel bell to be slowly lowed from the roof of the centre. Next Brian raced down from the higher platform of the stage and lept into the air and grabbed the rope which dangled from beneath the bell. At this point Brian was swinging upside down on the rope as if he was a trapeze artist and not a rock n roll singer of 49 years of age. By this time it was plain to see that Brian and the remainder of the band where quite simply having a ball.

By the time "The Jack" was introduced as a song "'bout a dirty woman" , "You've got to scratch them". The audience was already at fever pitch and Brian only managed to sing the first line of the song before admitting defeat and simply pointing the Mic in the direction of the audience which sang the song in its entirety and not just the chorus. At the end of the track Brian just turned to the audience and said "That's great singing Aberdeen".

The performance of "Ballbreaker" was almost deafening as Brian swung high above the stage ontop of a ball which was suspended from a crane as the band pounded out the rhythm of the track. The accompanying video saw old fashioned cars and aeroplanes crashing into each other.

Other tracks performed included "Dog eat Dog" , "Dirty Deeds" , "Rock n Roll aint a noise pollution" and "You Shook me all night long". The guitar playing during "Dog eat Dog" was superb and it was great to hear an oldie track which has not been performed live for several tours.

A personal highlight for myself was to hear "Whole Lotta Rosie" performed live for the first time and to witness the band in full flight. As if that was not enough we were blasted with some "T.N.T." next. Much to the delight of myself and the rest of the crowd. "Let there be rock" followed and absolutely amazing with Angus disappearing mid-song only to appear at the rear of the hall playing his heart out on a raised platform which protruded into the crowd. After "Let there be rock" the band left the stage to rapturous applause but the night was not over yet.

The crane slowly powered into action with the large ball being manoeuvred across to the centre of the stage before crashing to the floor like a nuclear explosion. From the flames and pyrotechnics a cage rose from beneath the stage. Inside the cage the figure of Angus could be seen complete with two devil like horns protuding from his head. This sparked the performance of "Highway to Hell" which was absolutly amazing. The accompanying video showed a cartoon like image of Angus which was very similar to the cover of the Australian version of the "Highway to Hell" album.

After "Highway to Hell" six cannons appeared above the stage to signal the beginning of "For those about to Rock". The sight of the cannons firing on Brian's command had to be seen to be believed. At the finale the roar of "We salute you Aberdeen" could be replied to by 6000 tired and exhausted fans with we salute you "AC/DC".
