AC/DC are still really big noises

AC/DC Glasgow SECC

THERE'S nothing like a quiet homecoming in the company of a few friends ... and the return of Scots exiles Malcolm and Angus Young's popular beat-combo AC/DC to Glasgow was nothing like a quiet homecoming.

It was party time for the capacity 8500 crowd from the moment Angus blasted out the opening riff of You Shook Me All Night Long on his trusty Gibson SG in the shadow of a 50ft statue of himself.

While Angus and singer Brian Johnson ran around like nutters for two hours, rhythm guitarist Malcolm, drummer Phil Rudd and bass player Cliff Williams were immense as the band's powerhouse engine room.

There were a couple of numbers from their latest album, Stiff Upper Lip, but the bulk of the set was vintage, high voltage AC/DC.

Old favourites came thick and fast ... and very loud. The boys are getting better with every year - and their stage props are getting bigger and more ridiculous, too.

The giant statue of Angus started to move, its eyes lit up and it began breathing smoke during Thunderstruck.

Jets of flame shot across the stage as the band ripped through Highway To Hell, a giant bell dropped from the roof for Hell's Bells and a 50ft inflatable woman waved from behind the wall of Marshall amps during Whole Lotta Rosie.

Then, all too quickly, a six-cannon salute brought the best - and by far the loudest - rock show of the century so far to an end.
