| Kerrang Album Review (Extract) As featured in issue dated 26th Feb 2000 AC/DC Stiif Upper Lip (EMI/Liberty 5256672) KKKK Thirteeth full length UK studio album by the Aussie boogie Veterans. With Stiff upper Lip they've stripped things back down to basics and delivered an album soaked in primal blues power. It's what they do best and it only takes the opener/title track for them to prove it. When the band run through the opening cross-cutting riff twice, you already find yourself tapping your toe with epileptic enthusiasim. Then comes Brian Johnson's opening gambit. 'I was out on a drive on a bit of a trip/Looking for thrills to get me some kicks/Now I warn you ladeeez/I shoot from the hip/Iwas born with a stiff/STIFF UPPER LIP!' The riffs as ever are here in abundence, sounding remarkably familar at times (surely the telegraph boogie of 'Can't stand still' is a reworking of 'Thunderstruck'?), yet infectious throughout. Angus Young's fretboard-withering solos are also present and correct (Damned is a particularly rampant example). Then there's that rock solid, flash-free backbeat courtesy of Messrs Williams and Rudd, and those huge gang-show chorus. Review by Phil Alexander |
