Metal Hammer August 2001

It is, of course, a psychologist's nightmare. On stage, a middle-aged man is running around in a school uniform playing guitar as his band indulge a i reasonable (though not massive, it must 1be said! sized crowd in a non-stop stream of hilariously sexist anthems. All topped off with lashings of double-entendres, and saucy, seaside postcard nudge- nudge references to the female form. And i yet when that middle-aged man begins to remove his clothing, a crowd of (mostly) slightly younger men begin to go wild, reaching a climactic crescendo when the skinny figure drops his trousers to reveal a pair of Union Flag boxer shorts.

Welcome then, to the world of AC/DC. There has never been anyone quite like them, and there probably never will again. They've outlived every music fad from ~ glam onwards, they haven't made a really good record for 20 years (okay, last year's ~ 'Stiff Upper Lip' was something of a return to form) and yet here they are wowing the assembled masses with a set of die-hard crowd pleasing rock anthems. One after another, a bona-fide classic is rolled out to delight the hordes. From 'Problem Child' to Whole Lotta Rosie', from 'Bad Boy Boogie' to 'Highway To Hell'.

There are people here who probably ; wouldn't dream of seeing another hard rock band. They all want to see the bell for 'Hell's Bells' and the cannons for 'For Those About To Rock' They're not disappointed.

AC/DC, live at least, never disappoint. They even throw in the rarely heard 'Up To My Neck In You' from the ; majestic 'Powerage' album, which goes down a treat. But they mostly stick to their maxim of if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Let there be rock, they said. There certainly was.
