AC/DC TO PERFORM AT THE PALACE AUGUST 3
Australian pioneering hard rock band AC/DC will perform at The Palace Thursday, August 3 at 8 p.m. Tickets at $45.25 and $35.25 reserved go on sale this Saturday, June 17 at 10 a.m. at The Palace and Pine Knob Box Offices and all Ticketmaster centers. Tickets may also be charged by phone to American Express, Discover, Visa, Mastercard and Diners Club by calling 248/645-6666 or purchased through Ticketmaster Online located at www.ticketmaster.com. AC/DC was formed in 1973 in Australia by guitarist Malcolm Young. He recruited his 15-year-old brother Angus, who began wearing his school uniform on stage, a look which became the band’s visual trademark. The group played gigs around Sydney and, with Dave Evans supplying vocals, they cut their first single, “Can I Sit Next to You.” The following year, the band moved to Melbourne, where drummer Phil Rudd and bassist Mark Evans joined the group. Bon Scott, at the time AC/DC’s chauffeur, became their lead vocalist when Doug Evans refused to go on stage. Scott was a veteran of several bands and his presence gave them a harder edge. AC/DC’s first two Australian releases, High Voltage (1974) and TNT (1975), gained them popularity down under, and the two albums were combined for their U.S. and U.K. debut release High Voltage (1976) as the band toured both countries. The following year, Mark Evans left the band and was replaced by Cliff Williams as it charted its first U.S. release Let There Be Rock. The group’s popularity continued to grow, buoyed by their dynamic live shows, which were captured on 1978’s live If You Want Blood, You’ve Got It as well as its other release from the same year, Powerage.

AC/DC followed with its breakthrough album Highway to Hell (1979), containing the hit title track. The release hit number 17 in the U.S. and number eight in the U.K., and became the group’s first million-seller. In 1980, Scott died and was replaced by Brian Johnson. The band appeared to lose none of its momentum as the album Back in Black (1980), featuring the hit title track, sold more than 10 million copies in the U.S. alone. The release catapulted the band to headlining status for several years as it continued to sell out arenas and put out chart-topping albums such as For Those About to Rock We Salute You (1982), Flick of the Switch (1983) and The Razor’s Edge (1990) featuring the hit single “Thunderstruck.” During this period, Rudd left the band and was replaced by Simon Wright. The group continued to be a top concert draw the world over throughout the 1990s, and its popularity was proven when its 1995 album, Ballbreaker, entered the U.S. charts at number four and sold more than a million copies in its first six months of release. Rudd rejoined the band prior to the recording of the album. In 1997, the band released Bonfire, a five-CD collection crafted as a tribute to their legendary vocalist Scott. AC/DC’s latest release, Stiff Upper Lip (2000), currently sits on Billboard’s 200 Top-Selling Albums charts, where it peaked at number seven. The album’s hit title track and single “Satellite Blues” are currently listed on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. The band’s 2000 line-up consists of original members, brothers Malcolm and Angus Young (guitars) and Rudd (drums). Rounding out the roster is Johnson (vocals) and Williams (bass).
