Acca Dacca and 17 vans comin' at ya
Date: 03/10/2000
AC/DC may have missed out on the Olympics closing
ceremony, but Australians will have a chance to salute
their biggest rock export this summer. AC/DC was invited to perform alongside Kylie Minogue and INXS at the closing ceremony on Sunday night, but had touring commitments in Europe. The hard rocking act has sold 85 million albums worldwide. A street is named after it in Madrid, and it is to be inducted into the Rock'n'Roll Hall of Fame. The band is revered around the world; one budding player recently forked out $40,000 at a charity auction for a private lesson with guitarist Angus Young. For its most recent album, Stiff Upper Lip, the band reunited with producer George Young, brother of guitarists Angus and Malcolm, and returned to its blues roots. The album debuted in the top 12 in 14 countries, including No 7 in Britain and No 12 in the United States. The band is famous for its live shows, and the September issue of Australian Rolling Stone magazine listed the band's Ballbreaker tour show in Perth in 1996 in its "Gigs of the Decade". The band traditionally begins its Australian shows in Perth, the home town of original singer Bon Scott, and then 17 semi-trailers will lug the gear around the country, before arriving at the Sydney Entertainment Centre on January 30. Tickets go on sale on October 16. The Age Thanks to Karen Jackson at Streakerama for submitting this article.
