The reader is caught up in two parallel stories: one of Little Stevie Wright's brilliant, though fleeting, success as the lead singer of The Easybeats during the 1960s and his subsequent downward spiral into drug addiction; the other, the breathtaking story of Jack Marx's own misadventures which occurred while he researched and wrote the book. In his attempts to get to the heart of Stevie, Jack himself becomes part of the dim world of shabby drug deals, alcohol and handouts on which Stevie subsists. Their bleak journey together, and the many pathetic trials encountered before their acrimonious parting, makes for distressing but utterly compelling reading.
