AC/DC Online chat at telestra Australia Sat 18th March 2000
Interviewer: Welcome Angus and
Malcolm Young from the legendary band AC/DC.
Thanks for joining us here today, how are you both
? AC_DC: Great.
Interviewer: Rattray asks: Hi
Guys, i was going to ask, being in a band as big
as AC/DC...being highly recognized worldwide as
one of the leading rock outfits, after all this
time, is it still fun to do what you do?
(recording in studio and Touring), and what do you
enjoy more, performing live or in the studio? ,
thanx AC_DC: You like both. The
studio you can create and live you can see the
songs you've created and see the action.
Interviewer: headly asks: Are
you guys planning an australian tour any time in
the near future? AC_DC: At the
moment we will be touring, we are waiting to
confirm dates and where we are playing. But we
will definately be playing in Australia in the
near future.
Interviewer:
powerager asks: malcolm was quoted as saying
there are 3 classics on Stiff Upper Lip, which
songs? i reckon Satellite Blues would be up there
? AC_DC: Yeah that's right. There
are a lot of songs that are good. I never said
that there was 3 classics. There was more than 3,
I'd say 12.
Interviewer:
^Gidget asks: #Auditorium.Room01 - asks: Who
thought of the title of the new album and how is
it relavent to the band and your music?
AC_DC: It was Angus that thought of
the title. It's just from an image, from when I
was younger, it's an image, like an image like
Elvis, Mick Jagger and his big lips.
Interviewer: Clint asks: Angus,
did you do the backup vocal line in the chorus of
Come & Get it or was that Mal? Its my fave
track! AC_DC: That was Malcom. I'm
doing one in another track - Hold me Back.
Interviewer: powerager asks:
can you give a rough outline of the world tour - i
plan to follow some of it AC_DC: The
world tour - well it's just where we decide to
kick off - maybe in America, we are not sure, we
should now in the next few weeks, it just depends
where they will have as playing as to where we
start.
Interviewer: Rattray
asks: Angus, are you influenced by any other
guitarists as they are inspired by you (re. Brian
may of Queen), and if so who? AC_DC:
A lot of blues play, people like Muddy Waters,
Rock and roll - Chuck Berry. I'm a fan of rock n'
roll and the blue. I'm the biggest fan of Chuck
Berry.
Interviewer: Clint asks:
Will there be any more studio tracks not on Stiff
Upper Lip that will be released as b-sides on
upcoming singles? AC_DC: There is
always things that we have laying about I suppose,
but we haven't decided yet. I mean it's a hard
thing to say really.
Interviewer:
Wilbur asks: Angus/Malcolm How often do you
guys get to come back to Australia (outside
touring etc)? AC_DC: Christmas,
Easter - a couple of times a year. As often as we
can. We need a touch of reality. You know back to
the real world.
Interviewer:
Rattray asks: Angus & Malcolm, what was
the first record either of you bought?
AC_DC_Angus: You Keep a Knocking by
Little Richard AC_DC_Malcom: I
think it was a Beatles record - maybe A Hard Days
Night
Interviewer: Clint asks:
Angus: Malcolm along with the Gretsch guitar
company put out a 'signature edition' guitar
(which I'm saving up for!) - Will you ever do the
same with Gibson guitars? AC_DC: At
the moment they are talking with me, they want to
issue a signature thing. The are just measuring up
mine, the one I play alot is in the studio, it's
the one I like best, and had the longest, they are
just measuring it up and looking at it now. In the
future there will be one coming out.
Interviewer: Miki asks: Angus,
you play a Gibson SG. Did you use any other
guitars in the recording of your new album ?
AC_DC: No just the Gibson SG.
Interviewer: Poddy asks: With
computers so prevalent these days, do you write
songs on paper or do you use a computer?
AC_DC: Mainly just by picking up a
guitar and banging away and singing into a
microphone.
Interviewer:
sertigus asks: did either of you ever give
rosie (the namesay for one of the best songs) a
root or was is just bon who mounted the beast?
AC_DC: Excuse Me!? Yeah it was
mainly Bon, he got inspired by Rosie. He was the
only one game enough.
Interviewer:
Kelpie asks: How long does it take for an
AC/DC song to be recorded?? Do you spend like,
days or even weeks, on an individual song??
AC_DC: It depends, sometimes very
quick, you might get it done on the first take or
you might be working on it until your completely
happy. It may be a day or maybe a few weeks. You
might be luck and get it done on the first take,
or the first few takes.
Interviewer: headly asks: how
have you guys managed to stay together for so long
? AC_DC: Love. Love and a big
cheque.
Interviewer:
metallicaman asks: hello angus and malcom, i
was wondering who are your favorite bands?
AC_DC: There is only really one -
and that's The Rolling Stones - that's because
it's rock and roll. The Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee
Lewis era - rock and roll. Currently though The
Stones.
Interviewer:
acdc_salmins asks: Hello Angus and Mal! The
Stiff Upper Lip video was shot a few days ago.
When will it appear on TV? AC_DC: I
know that we've filmed it all so it should be
ready in the coming few weeks. So I suppose in the
next few weeks at some point.
Interviewer: Mike66 asks: Gday
Lads Just wondering what out of all the Albums adn
songs you have written over the last 2 and 1/2
decades stadn out to be your favourites for me I
love as a fan since you first formed way back in
the 70's love Dirty Deeds AC_DC:
That's hard - I love them all I suppose.
Interviewer: The_Outsider asks:
I have found listening to Stiff Upper Lip that it
has a different sound to anything I have heard
from you before, it has more of a jazz feel, how
did that come about? AC_DC: A jazz
feel. What planet are you on?
Interviewer: Miki asks: do you
think you have developed (musically) with the new
album in your playing AC_DC: Uhm. We
found a new cord - yeah - d. Definately a couple
of new dance steps.
Interviewer:
Gibson67SG asks: What memories do you both
have of the early days touring Australia?
AC_DC: Tons of memories. Just
playing everywhere - I mean we cut our teeth in
Australia, it was always the most fun, definately
the wildest. I think we lost a few teeth as well.
Interviewer: Volker asks: Do
you know that Alberts still have got the movie
shot at your "Lock up your daughters" tour back in
1976/77? It should be released!
AC_DC: I don't think we ever saw
that. I know it was done - I think we got to see a
little bit of it, but that was it. Sounds good.
Interviewer: Wilbur asks: What
was it like working with big brother George again?
I have always like the record he has produced for
you guys? AC_DC: It's fun. Good
referee. He's the best for rock and roll, without
a doubt.
Interviewer: ^Gidget
asks: #Auditorium.Room01 - asks: Angus do you ever
plan to rid of the School Uniform or you have
already and im just slow?
AC_DC_Angus: No they are the best
suits I own - so they are not going.
Interviewer: Mike66 asks: HAve
you guys ever though of perhaps going back to your
roots so to speak adn do a limited Pub Circuit
Tour in Aus ? AC_DC: I think we
drunk them all dry. Back to your roots - new hair
dye?
Interviewer: faster007
asks: To commemorate the 20th anniversy of Bon's
death your original singer, Dave Evans did a gig
here is Melbourne with an AC/DC cover band. It was
great they did really early stuff,..Rockin in the
Parlor, Can I sit next to.. It was filmed and is
gonna be released. Had you heard about it?
AC_DC: No.
Interviewer: why asks: how true
are the rumours we keep hearing, this is the last
album and last tour? AC_DC_Angus:
That's what they said last tour - no that's hog
wash.
Interviewer: crazycanuck
asks: Did you think the private guitar lesson
would go for such a high price?
AC_DC: I didn't know really I
suppose, but you know it goes towards a good
cause.
Interviewer: Richard
asks: Angus, whats the stage set going to be like
this time around? AC_DC: It will be
very exciting, we always put on a good production,
good staging. We know people like a good stage
show, we always put a lot of time, money and
effort into it.
Interviewer:
sertigus asks: why is it that 'long way to the
top' is never played live? is it because the
bagpipes would be a pain or is it out of respect
for bon? AC_DC_Angus: well each tour
we think that we will play it, we gear up to play.
But sometimes we go to play it, but then someone
tells us that Johnny Farnham played it the week
before, so you know.
Interviewer:
sertigus asks: the largest crowd you ever
played infront of was in mexico. what was it like
to look out and sea a flood of over 1 million
people? AC_DC_Angus: Well actually
it was Moscow in Russia. It was thrilling, but
also kind of scary.
Interviewer:
What asks: Do you have standard pick ups in
your guitars or what brand do you have, also what
gauge strings do you have ?
AC_DC_Angus: pick ups, they are just
standard, come stock with the guitar, they come
with my stock, the actual SG itself. The strings
are a 9 and 42, the brand is Ernie Ball. He's got
big ones.
Interviewer: Jute
asks: Malcolm, have you recorded with your
signature model Gretsch, or do you still
exclusivley use your Firebird which George gave
you? AC_DC_Malcom: yeah I still use
the original Firebird, which Harry gave me not
George, I use it on every gig, unless it's been
smashed.
Interviewer: sertigus
asks: what do you do when you'se aren't being
legends on your guitars?
AC_DC_Malcom: make bookends around
the house.
Interviewer:
crazycanuck asks: Are you releasing the
recently recorded acoustic version of You Shook Me
all Night Long? AC_DC_Angus: Did
they realise it? No it's on the net and that's as
far as it will go. The caught us at a weak moment.
Interviewer: metallicaman asks:
Whats the story behind the song "She's got balls"
written by the legendary Bon Scott?
AC_DC_Angus: Well it was mainly - it
was the first song we wrote together. Bon's wife
was the inspiration.
Interviewer:
headly asks: how have you guys managed to stay
so fresh with your music over the years
AC_DC_Malcom: What was Angus -
Viagra?
Interviewer: ^Gidget
asks: #Auditorium.Room01 - asks: Do you guys ever
plan in the future to do what Metallica have done
and play with an Orchestra?
AC_DC_Angus: we can only play three
cords. No i don't think that we will be doing
that. Anything they do - we don't.
Interviewer: Graeme asks: how
much time do you all spend together.. working as
ACDC do you have any solo plans ?
AC_DC_Angus: AC/DC certainly takes
up most of the Young brothers time.
Interviewer: hags asks: Are
there any plans for an authorised/official book or
video regarding the history of the band?
AC_DC_Angus: There are still
chapters being written I think.
Interviewer: Neut asks: I have
a bet on with a friend of mine. He claims that
John Paul Young is related to you guys (probably
because you all come from Glasgow). Could you
please give me the definitive answer, one way or
the other. It could win/lose me a few bob. Thanks.
AC_DC_Malcom: tuff luck. No - he's
no relative, but he is about the same height as us
and I can see his point. He doesn't have ANgus'
legs.
Interviewer: The_Outsider
asks: Do you have any plans to use enhanced CD's
with vids on them? AC_DC: Like
DVD's? I suppose in some point in the future, it
is inevitable. Technology.
Interviewer: do you use the
internet yourselves ? AC_DC_Angus:
It's a bit like the internet I used to think it
was a bad tennis call.
Interviewer:
do you use the internet yourselves ?
AC_DC_Angus: Yeah, Malcom is looking
at this web site now.
Interviewer:
Beekon asks: In the movie, PRIVAYE PARTS You
sang "you shook me all night long". Who was the
drummer? AC_DC_Angus: that was Phil.
Phil Rudd. AC_DC_Malcom: He must
of had his glasses on.
Interviewer:
tattooz asks: do you still drink a lot of beer
? AC_DC_Angus: Do I drink beer? No -
I drink Tea. The rest of them do all the drinking
for me. AC_DC_Malcom: Beer and
Tea.
Interviewer: Miki asks:
Angus, has Hendrix ever been an influence on your
music ? AC_DC_Angus: the hair style.
Interviewer: gibsonsg asks:
angus i think u are a legend im currently trying
to play back in black however i cannot get the
first bend right can u please help ?
AC_DC_Angus: Well I suppose,
technically, it's on the G string. That's sounds
good. It's on the G position on the E string.
That's where it starts, it's a bit of a high
flick.
Interviewer: Wilbur
asks: Over the years do you think the way you set
up your sound has changed, buy that I mean on some
records you can tell that you have the gain on the
amps absolutley cranked up (on songs like overdose
this is obvious) where as the latest album is a
"FATTER" sound do you vary the guitar sound much?
AC_DC_Angus: Depending on the songs,
some sounds you want to crank it up a lot, other
sounds you want it cleane, depending on the track
though.
Interviewer: MeTaLgIrL
asks: Love Song on HIgh Voltage was so different
at the time, what made you write that song?
AC_DC_Angus: It was really Bon, he
though it was a good parity, you know those ballad
songs.
Interviewer: Jute asks:
Malcolm, I’ve noticed over the years that you’ve
produced the occasional song bordering on funky,
stuff like 'Meanstreak'. Have you ever been
tempted to make an album of non-AC/DC style music,
with or without your brother, perhaps under a
'Flash and the Pan' sort of name?
AC_DC_Malcom: actually the funky
stuff, I mean it's one of many tracks that Angus
and I have worked on. There is no plan to do solo.
I mean the world is burdened enough with solo
albums. AC_DC_Angus: Michael
Jackson plus four. Michael Jackson 1 plus 3.
Interviewer: hags asks: I hear
Molly Meldrum's been knocking on your door again!
He just won't grow up will he. What are your
memories of the early days of Countdown?
AC_DC_Angus: I remember Bon, getting
on dresses. The first time we got on he wore a
girls school dress, you know with a cigarette in
his mouth and blond wig. Well we couldn't get rid
of Molly Meldrum after that.
Interviewer: ron asks: do you
still reguard yourselves as an australian band?
AC_DC_Angus: You bet you. We started
from Australia. I think everyone in the world
knows us as an Australian Band.
Interviewer: Darrell asks:
Angus when you came to Portland on August 12 1977,
you were only 17 (?) - I was 13 and backstage, the
Warrnabool City Coucil wanted a $500 bond so you'd
keep your pants on, you decied to come to Portland
instead. Who owned the Pink HQ Holden?
AC_DC_Angus: Gee I don't know. I
suppose we had driven down in it.
AC_DC_Malcom: It might have been
the managers - the shifty one.
AC_DC_Angus: I'm polising my
butt.
Interviewer: Gibson67SG
asks: How many roadcrew are needed to mount an
AC/DC tour ? AC_DC_Angus: the last
tour we did, I think it was over 65. Every time
you go on tour there always seems to be a few new
jobs addeed. So who knows how many next tour.
Interviewer: Baz asks: Hey
Malcom how come you haven't taken up the duck walk
AC_DC_Malcom: (Laughing). How come I
haven't taken up the duck walk? - I find it hard
to just walk normal.
Interviewer:
MeTaLgIrL asks: I just want to say happy
birthday to Malcom whos birthday was in January.
AC_DC_Malcom: Thankyou.
Interviewer: Wilbur asks: do
you keep in touch with any of the Australian bands
you toured with over the years (bands like the
angels etc) does Molly Meldrum send you a
Christmas Card every year?
AC_DC_Malcom: Thankfully we are not
on Molly's Christmas card list.
AC_DC_Angus: Yeah, we bump into
a lot of the guys, you become friends with them,
from the beginning.
Interviewer:
mikecro asks: What do you guys think of the
music being produced in Australia today? Are there
any new Aussie bands that you like?
AC_DC_Malcom: A band about 5 or 6
years ago called Cruel Sea. We haven't been in
touch much, we haven't been over there much so we
haven't kept up.
Interviewer:
Wegwijs asks: Wegwijs : I saw on some site
that Angus and Mal were to be in Paris next
Thursday . Is it real news ?
AC_DC_Angus: Yes.
Interviewer: Che asks: The
other day as I often do, I went and had a beer
with Bon for his 20th anniversary memorial
service, did yous crack a slab?
AC_DC_Angus: We always remember Bon.
Bon is one of those people that once you knew him
you never forget him.
Interviewer:
Gibson67SG asks: Malcolm, why did you decide
to remove the front pickup on your Gretsch ?
AC_DC_Angus: that's his ashtray.
AC_DC_Malcom: that's an old
question, and that' answer is very well used.
Interviewer: liz5043 asks: What
Amplifiers and Speakers do you use on stage?
AC_DC_Angus: Marshall, and there are
a few specialist amps we have made by a technician
friend of ours, called Wizard.
Interviewer: Mavrick asks:
Angus have you ever used a Gibson Nighthawk
Standard? , I've got one and there magnificent,
They've got 10 pick up configs.
AC_DC_Angus: Oh I have one of the
early ones they send, it remained, there where
that many dials and buttons, I think you needed a
degree in science to operate it.
Interviewer: marasco asks: If i
burn all your records, Will i be dammed?
AC_DC_Angus: Of course.
Interviewer: Kelpie asks: I saw
you guys in 1991, and kept banging my head like
Angus does on stage . . . and had to visit a
chiropractor three days later. Angus, do you ever
get a headache from all that 'headbanging' you do?
AC_DC_Angus: Not really, a bit of
brain shake, but not headache.
Interviewer: Rattray asks: what
it be too harsh to say that you guys will tour
australia before the end of the year?
AC_DC_Angus: Well hopefully we will
get to Australia some point, once we start touring
the world, we always include Australia. I don't
know exactly when, the sooner the better though I
suppose.
Interviewer: Goss
asks: Have you ever been approached by Hollywood
execs. about a movie of the band?
AC_DC_Angus: well of the years
different people from all parts have asked us to
do things, but I suppose we are not a really a
glitzy, glammy type band that gets off on the
Hollywood type thing.
Interviewer:
Dudi asks: Mal and Angus, please get Brian to
ring the Hells Bell again on the SUL tour. I
really missed its sound in 1996!
AC_DC_Angus: Okay, will do.
Interviewer: Loonytoons asks:
You guys have been touring for many years now is
there anywhere you havent been?
AC_DC_Angus: We haven't been into
China yet, and a few of the other Asian countries.
Interviewer: why asks: in the
last tour you did a few tracks not usally played
live like dog eat dog, beating around the bush,
any others like that you want to do on this tour?
AC_DC_Angus: Well we always like, we
get a lot of songs from the older albums, we get
them out and play, we always try to get alot, you
know hopefully pick the best from each album.
Interviewer: Gibson67SG asks:
Where in the world do you guys call home these
days ? AC_DC_Malcom: Australia.
Interviewer: Guest58778 asks:
bertrand asks: angus do you have kids, if yes do
they play music AC_DC_Angus: No, but
Malcom has two children.
AC_DC_Malcom: the kids play a
little bit, but there is to much else going on in
their lives. There into music, but they are not
playing as real players.
AC_DC_Angus: Too busy with
Nintendo aren't they?
Interviewer:
Wegwijs asks: Wegwijs : there's gonna be an
ACDC street in Spain : what do you think of it ?
AC_DC_Angus: That's great. Malcom
and myself are going to be there next week
sometime we are going there I think to open. I'm
thinking of moving there.
AC_DC_Malcom: the should get one
in Germany - AC/DC strausse.
Interviewer: Clint asks: Guys -
I followed the '96 tour around Australia and saw
13 shows over 21 days - it was the best! BUT, all
of the set lists were the same, will it be a
little more dynamic this tour?
AC_DC_Angus: We always work out
quite a few songs, you know, sometimes when they
put together the production they want to get the
prop things, you know Hells Bells, We always try
to get the best.
Interviewer:
powerager asks: will brian, cliff or phil
write any songs in future?
AC_DC_Angus: I suppose, it's up to
them I suppose.
Interviewer:
Darrell asks: So what's dragged you guys onto
the 'net, though we appreciate it, are you closet
Nerds now? AC_DC_Angus: are we close
nerds - you mean do we do lunch with Bill Gates?
Interviewer: its_bedlam asks:
Is it true that you guys use to fight over what
song you would do for an encore?
AC_DC_Angus: I think a lot of the
early shows we never used to do encores. It was
really only when we came to AMerica - the
promoters would say to all they would start to
riot. It would calm the audience down.
Interviewer: liz5043 asks: Have
you been approached to open/close the Olympic
Games in September?? Thought maybe you could do a
duet with Dame Edna!! AC_DC_Angus:
laughing AC_DC_Malcom: better
than Johnny Farnham.
Interviewer:
Kreesh asks: Angus do you still do sketches
and if so would you ever consider having them
published for all of us to see your other artistic
talents? AC_DC_Angus: Yes I do still
do sketches. In my handy work there is this little
devil I do a lot. But no I wouldn't publish,
wouldn't enflict that on the public. It just for
myself, for a hobby.
Interviewer:
MeTaLgIrL asks: What sort of Vacuum cleaner
did your sister see the name "AC/DC" on?
AC_DC_Malcom: a Bernina.
Interviewer: jodie1 asks:
#Auditorium.Room01 - asks: i have been a fan of
yous since the 70's think you's guys are great! So
do you still party hard or have you's mellowed
with age? AC_DC_Angus: I'll that to
Malcom. AC_DC_Malcom: Yeah will
put it down that we've mellowed with age.
Interviewer: LAPPO asks: angus
you said at a public interview that playing live
is better than sex for you is that true?
AC_DC_Angus: I lied. Nearly as good.
AC_DC_Malcom: I'm sick - what
can I say.
Interviewer:
SPOOK666 asks: What do you think of the
Australian Rock scene at the moment and do you
think the neew bands still have it?
AC_DC_Malcom: Australia has always
had a lot of different bands. Especially in a
younger sense. I wouldn't now the current
AC_DC_Angus: I wouldn't know the
current trends - as Malcom said - we really don't
get time to plug into the scene.
Interviewer: jojo29 asks: how
did the song thunderstruck come about ,that song
gets the blood pumping ,makes you feel alive
AC_DC_Angus: Just a title that come
about, I remember going to Berlin I was in an
aeroplane and it got struck by lighting, and I
remember a stewardess saying, because it shook the
plane around the bit, and she said don't panic we
just got hit by lighting, and I said we just got
thunder struck, and it sounded like a good title.
We could have called it brown pants as well.
Interviewer: Jute asks: Angus,
as an aspiring guitarist, your music has been my
schooling and I have found that working out your
music is great ear training. However, I’ve never
been able to work out the very first 3 chords in
the intro of 'Nervous Shakedown', any chance you
could tell me? AC_DC_Angus: It's e,
it starts of as e, yeah, it does an e and then it
does an e to g thing. Its a bit hard, I'll tell
you they do alot of guitar transcripts on the net,
I think that even MTV in America do one on the net
now.
Interviewer: acdc_salmins
asks: Malcolm, you seems to be a great soccer
player in the Let Ther Be Rock film. Did you ever
thought of be a professional player?
AC_DC_Malcom: no, no, that was just
fancy camera. I couldn't kick a ball to save my
life. But I am a big soccor fan.
Interviewer: Many thanks ANgus
and Malcolm, its been great. Thanks to the
chatters AC_DC_Angus: Give all the
fans our best. AC_DC_Malcom: we
will see them as soon as we can on tour, and we
miss the Sydney Rock Oysters.
