AC/DC - "Molson Canadian Rocks"
Downsview Park
Toronto
30th July 2003

AC/DC at SARSSTOCK - Reviews

AC/DC played from 8:05pm - 9:15pm
Angus and Malcolm later joined the Rolling Stones for "Rock me Baby"

It took a bum to get them off their bums.

The butt that made the difference belonged to AC/DC lead guitarist Angus Young, and when it flashed Canadian-flag underwear, it brought all half-million Toronto rock fans to their feet after a long, hot summer day that had nearly knocked them off their feet.

The frenetic Australian band — final act of 14 bands to appear at the Rolling Stones/SARS concert before the infamous headliners themselves — picked up a day that had all but melted the tarmac at the old Downsview military airstrip, and in doing so transported it into an event that most assuredly captured the attention of distant neighbours, if not a fair portion of the world

It was the hardrockers from Australia who brought the tired, sunburned crowd to its feet, playing a set that sounded like a greatest hit package.

"Hey Toronto, thanks for inviting us here," said AC/DC frontman Brian Johnson, in a gravelly voiced greeting. "We wouldn't have missed it for the f---ing world."

He later coaxed the audience into making "the loudest, nastiest noise in all of Canada" during the singalong anthem Thunderstruck.

It took an Australian rock band to really kick the biggest rock concert in Canadian history into high gear during the evening portion of SARS-Stock.

Not surprisingly, it was ballsy veteran rockers AC/DC led by full-throated singer Brian Johnson and boys-school-uniform-wearing guitarist Angus Young.

Leading off their 70-minute set with Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be, the bad boys from Down Under hit their stride quickly with fan favourites Back In Black, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap and Thunderstruck.

It was hard to top the classic rock moment of Back In Black and the sight of Young wailing away on the guitar during his signature solo, although later tunes You Shook Me All Night Long and the encore number Highway To Hell came awfully close.

"Hey, Toronto, thanks for bringing us here," yelled Johnson, whose enthusiasm inspired clap-alongs on more than one occasion.

Other highlights included Hells Bells, complete with the video of a bell clanging in a ring of fire, and The Jack, which featured Young's well-known striptease. This time, though, the latter ended with Young pulling down his shorts to reveal red-and-white boxer shorts decorated by a Canadian maple leaf.

Helping AC/DC get the audience's support was the fact that by the time they took the stage, the sun had gone down to allow two huge video screens on either side of the stage to really flicker to life.

So you could see them as well as hear them.

An hour earlier, AC/DC received a thundering response. The Aussie rockers didn't disappoint, launching into "Hell Isn't a Bad Place to Be" followed by crowd favourite "Back in Black."

"Thanks for inviting us," said a smiling singer Brian Johnson. "We wouldn't have missed it for the world."

The hits kept coming during the 60-minute set which included rock staples "Thunderstruck" and "Hells Bells," which prompted a giant singalong.

TORONTO, Canada -- A disused military air base in Toronto claimed a spot in rock festival history on Wednesday, as an estimated 450,000 fans braved a scorching sun to help the Rolling Stones, AC/DC and a dozen other acts lift the spirits of the SARS-hit Canadian city.

Hell ain't a bad place to be Back in Black Dirty Deeds Thunderstruck If you want Blood Hells Bells (ohne Bell) The Jack (incl. Strip / Canadian flag styled shorts) T.N.T. You shook me all Night long (mit Promovideo in halber Laenge ueber Bildschirme) Whole lotta Rosie Let there be Rock Highway to Hell (darin Brian am Ende: "We salute you Toronto, we salute you Canada, we salute you America")

Respekt aber fuer die "The Globe and Mail" Tageszeitung. The Guess Who und Rush mit 3 Zungen. Lest selbst:

"The World's Greatest Rock'n'Roll Band is the title often given to the Rolling Stones by default - but this night the honour went to AC/DC..."
