![]() Set List
Over the last couple of years I've seen two KISS shows, Page/Plant, Van Halen, Ted Nugent, and some other various rock shows, and this, by far, was the greatest. Well worth the $65 I spent. I'm not gonna talk about the show right away. Lemme tell you this: The real indication of the quality of the show was the crowd's craziness AFTER the show. For anyone who knows the Air Canada Centre, there's a large hall that connects the arena to the train station, Union Station. Well, after this amazing show, the hordes progressed down the escalators, screaming as hard as I've ever heard people scream. I think some security guys thought a riot was about to happen. They kept screaming all the way down the hall. Somebody kicked over a garbage can. I was so happy I gave the homeless guy begging for money by the door $5. Everyone kept screaming as they walked into Union Station, causing some travellers to get extremely worried that a riot was about to happen. Some black guy tapped me on the shoulder as I waited for my train and asked, "Did these people just come from a football game?" I have never seen a crowd that psyched AFTER a show. Sure, after some shows there's a smile on people's faces, and few guys let out some yelps outside the arena or stadium. But I've never seen this mass screaming for a good ten-fifteen minutes from that many people after a show. THAT's the real indication of how good this night was. What were the keys to the show? The band sounded great even up in the upper level where I was. The mix was pretty good but could have been better up in the rafters at my seat. Brian's voice disappeared in the mix on a few songs. On Brian's voice: on some songs he was great, some he couldn't touch the high notes. He would trail downward in his voice rather than go upward into the high notes. His worst song was his first: You shook me all night long. He was having some trouble getting the voice to hit the right notes. I was a bit worried but after that it wasn't too bad. He wasn't clear enough in the mix for me to critique his voice too much! Some guitar solos disappeared in the mix sometimes. But the rhythm guitar, bass, drums, were crystal clear. I assume down below (where I wish I had been!) would have been even better sonically. The band had so much energy. Not surprisingly, Angus led the way. Also, this crowd was the best crowd ever in terms of audience participation with songs. I mean, you expect the crowd to know the words and sing along, but on Hells Bells, Back in Black, Rock and Roll ain't Noise Pollution, and many others, the crowd was screaming the lyrics and pumping their hands in the air constantly. The chorus to Highway to Hell was my highlight. Everyone was into it. There was a real cool sense of being on the same wavelength with 16,000 other people (they didn't sell out, by the way, but this crowd was pumped). Also nice to see was some tits on the big screen. One blonde completely doffed her top and shaked her chest at the screen. She got about 30 seconds of screen time. Another chick (better lookin, in my opinion, flashed her tits but was a bit too much of a tease for me! take it all off, if yer gonna do that stuff, ladies!) They played one other new song -- Safe in New York City. Slash's snakepit was pretty good. The singer did a great Axl Rose impression on GNR classic "It's so easy". I never saw GNR live (I was 11 years old when they first toured) but this "taste of GNR" made me wish Slash and Axl would get back together. I thought the Snakepit songs were nondescript... nothing really stood out to me. The singer was pretty good although his stage antics were retarded. I guess I'll take a listen when the new album arrives, but they didn't blow me away. I think I was just happy to see Slash for the first time. His guitar solos were good, but the singer kept talking or singing over some of them. I think he should back off and let Slash play. That's the only guy anyone cares about in that band. Again though, the lasting memory from this show -- the thing that really put the exclamation point on the whole night, was the wild mob of fans leaving the arena. Never before have I seen people that satisfied who hadn't just gotten laid. Review by tpagels@my-deja.com
I'll keep this brief folks. Thursday night......... great seats right beside the sound board. Great show.. a younger crowd IMO. the boys sounded great nice a loud and tight. Brian is really having a blast up there, you can just see it. Just to see the guys agian was worth the money. I had a ton of fun..... Friday night.. FUCKITY FUCKIN KILLER SEATS!!!!! Right at the end of the ramp (second row) When Brian and Angus came down we were like 15-20 feet away. I could litterily feel the smile on my face jump off of it when they got our way. To be that close to an idol just made my life!!!! Bretzky got some great pics of that. And a shit load more. They did SINYC instead of GIH......they ripped it good too. Not too many people knew it but we did and thast's what matters. At the begining of HB's the sound guy fucked up the bell SXF. Oh well who cares. The guys were better than the 1st night. More energy more "into" it. As for the crowd. If anyone is reading this and was there last night....BRAVO TO YOU. I have never heard a crowd that into a 'DC show in my 8 times I've seen them. Everyone was singing along....and loud. But here is the best thing I've ever heard at a DC concert in my life or not even on a recording......During the strip the crowd kept chanting "Angus" but slowly. It was loud and it was beautyful to say the least. That for me was the highlight of the 2 nights. WE happened to see Gordie Johnson...the front man for Big Sugar and Dan Galhager.....fromer MM VJ. I also saw Joe Kayhill from 97.7 walkign around like he ws king shit....yeha right buddy drop 150 lbs and get familar with your dick agian!!!! I pumped into my buddy from high school.....same row just at the other end. Well I'm gonna be gone for a few days so Bretzky can fix me pc. I have no voice left, little $$$ but great memories of 2 killer shows with some good friends to see it with me. Dave I had a blast and we'll have to do it again. To all the other fans I just wanna say Thanks for being a DC fan and screamin' yer ass off last night...I though it was sooooooooo fuckity fuckin' cool......I'm outta here folks........ -- Review by DOOF (doof@sympatico.ca)
