![]() On Aug. 1, the "Highway to Hell" runs through Grand Rapids, Mich., where Australian hard rockers AC/DC kicks off its first concert tour in five years, supporting its latest album, Stiff Upper Lip. The group has been in Michigan rehearsing for the past few weeks, and guitarist Angus Young promises familiar AC/DC totems such as cannons, the giant bell, his schoolboy outfit, and "a few surprises." "I think, in this day and age, and especially with a band of our size, I think it gets to the point where you go, 'Well, it's a rock show,' rather than a rock band, and you have to look at it that way," Young says. "I always think people like value for money; they like to see a good show. I think you've got to give them a good show without breaking the bank." Young says AC/DC has been pleased with the reception accorded Stiff Upper Lip. Despite a five-year gap between it and AC/DC's last studio album, Ballbreaker — as well as the standard rumors of a split — the album debuted at No. 7 on the SoundScan album chart after its February release. Though it has since dropped considerably, Young says the band's goal is not to compete with the artists who are usually found in the top spots. "What we felt was missing out there yet again was really a good, raw, rock and roll album," Young says. "That's what we were concentrating on. We weren't looking for a sort of pop hit album; we were looking for a good rock and roll album, and that's what we stuck too." AC/DC's North American tour lasts until late September. Young says the group intends to be on the road into 2002, hitting Europe, Japan, and other territories, with plans to return to the U.S., probably during the summer of 2001. Gary Graff
